I saw Lollapalooza '91...
with Jane’s, Siouxsie, NIN, Ice-T, Surfers and Rollins!by Benjamin Holcomb on 02. Jul, 2009 | 2 Comments
Performer: Lollapalooza '91 Venue: Pine Knob Year: 1991 City: Clarkston State: MI
I’m proud to say, “I was there” for the inaugural “Lollapalooza Festival” in 1991.
The brainchild of Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, this was the first major concert festival of my generation… a veritable Woodstock for us Gen-Xers.
The line-up was astonishing, and included Jane’s Addiction, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T & Body Count, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, Violent Femmes and Fishbone.
Yum!

Lollapalooza (1991)
I’d already seen Nine Inch Nails and Siouxsie live, but it was such a treat to see Ice-T (even though I prefer his Hip-Hip stuff like “Power” and “Rhyme Pays” to his Nu-Metal “Body Count” stuff). I also really enjoyed Rollins Band and was pleasantly surprised by Living Colour.
I recall just one unpleasantry: I got a massive headache around the time Gibby Haynes and Butthole Surfers took the stage. It wasn’t the music I hated, it was Gibby firing off his stupid, fake shotgun! Oh my God, it was SOOO loud!

I think at the time I thought I was too cool to go to Lollapalooza! I know now that sounds sad. It was probably that I had no money at the time because I remember many friends going to see it. I am jealous because I would love to see some of those bands ~ on the other hand ~ that many bands in one show is a bit much for me.
I like the one opening band, one headliner ~ I am traditional like that.
Still would have loved to see NIN, Ice-T (agree with the hip hop comment), Rollins and Violent Femmes (who I DID see at Bumbershoot 1993 or 1994 in Seattle). Fishbone? What did you think?

I saw Lollapalozza in 1991 at Great Woods in Massachusetts. In 1992 at Saratoga Performance Center and in 1993 at Milan Dragway. Great fun every show! Milan was memorable for the heat–God awful. They had a firetruck come through and hose down the crowd.
In 1991 N.I.N. was great but the real show stopper was Ice-T. In 1992 the Chili Peppers played forever!! But the all time best was in 1993 was on the second stage– TOOL!
I kept the tickets stubs until 2006 and then tossed them thinking I would never need them but now I regret it because of this groovy site. Nicely done, Ben!
